Safe Schools Africa

Safe Schools Africa (SSA) provides the technical capacity on roads projects in sub-Saharan Africa to facilitate roads being designed and built safely for vulnerable road users like school children. In doing so, the programme will prevent countless injuries and deaths on Africa’s roads in the years to come, while at the same time helping to build the capacity and framework for local Project Teams to provide that expertise themselves (or source it routinely as part of projects) over the long term. This includes the in-country teams executing the project, usually comprising government agencies – including road authorities - as well as their consultants and contractors.
The cornerstone of SSA is the active and ongoing collaboration with the World Bank and other multilateral donor organisations, such as the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and European Investment Bank (EIB), and advocate for improved design of site-specific infrastructure to improve safety. The technical approach of Safe Schools Africa has been developed, refined and evaluated over more than a decade by the not-for-profit organisation Amend, in partnership with the FIA Foundation, through Amend’s School Area Road Safety Assessments and Improvements (SARSAI) programme.
